<HostInterface name="NewInter"/>
</Adapter>

Strangely enough, but after this attempt "Local Area Connection 2" interface had appeared. Selecting it and closing VirtualBox yields in another error:
Assertion failed: [VBOX_SUCCESS (vrc)] at 'E:\vbox\1.3-w32-rel\src\VBox\Main\MachineImpl.cpp' (4082) in Machine::openConfigLoader. VERR_OPEN_FAILED (-101) - File/Device open failed.. Please contact the product vendor!.

There was a bug in the add and remove host interface method. This caused a crash and possible corruption of your xml files. (Windows host only) The fix will be included in the next version. (due out soon)

Windows XP keeps refusing to load the tapi file and it has a yellow asterix marker in the hardware device panel.

This was fixed for 1.4.0 not for 1.3.8. Please try again and reopen if necessary.
I can confirm. With NAT it was impossible to get access to/from virtual machine via network. The situation with Host Interface Networking is even worse. First there were several errors while installing interface and now there is this error above. The system is the same, except it is 32 dual core Intel.
