Do you see any logs in the kernel log buffer (dmesg)?
Does VirtualBox segfault?
If so, could you provide a core dump (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Core_dump)?
On which file system did you try to open the zip file in the XP guest, on a shared folder or on the virtual hard disk?
