Merging snapshots takes ages

Description
I took three snapshots of a VM (with a few seconds between them), shutd own the vm and I'm trying to merge the first one for three hours now.
Progress bar is stuck at "36 seconds" left, I dont see any activity (no changing timestamps, no changing file sizes, nothing).
I guess something's pretty wrong here :)
Can you please tell me on how to investigate this issue further?

Did you check if there is enough disk space available? Merging usually needs quite some additional disk space. IIRC there is a disk space check but of course such checks are hard to implement rock-solid on a multi-user system.

Yes I did. I had about 60GB free, the VM was about 30G, the snapshot was around 1.1GB.
