Mouse integration broken in Mint Debian guest with 4.7 kernel -> duplicate of #15913

Description
Test system Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE 2) 32-bit guest was upgraded to the the latest kernel - 4.7.2 which is now available through backports.
Upon rebooting the guest, the VBox Client crashed. Mouse integration didn't work and the screen image was only 2/3rds of the full screen. Re-installed Guest Additions and re-booted.
Screen size was now correct (namely fullscreen) but mouse integration still does not work.
My LMDE 2 64-bit guest was also upgraded to use the latest kernel and that is fine. Therefore, it appears as if mouse integration is only broken for 32-bit guests debian based guests running the 4.7 kernel.
I have attached both the latest VBox log of the guest and the kernel log of the guest itself.

Could you please try re-installing the latest 5.1 test build Additions<1> and if that fails attach all /var/log/vbox*.log and /var/log/VBox*.log files? Thanks.

Tested with GA test build 110849 but external symptoms were the same, namely,
Re-installed GA's and the screen size was corrected (full screen) but the mouse integration was still broken. Note : The installation of the GA's appeared to work correctly - no error messages produced.
Guest logs attached, as requested.

Silly question, but mouse integration is not disabled in the menus for that machine, is it?
Not as far as I know. Furthermore, this time I took a backup of the vdi file for that guest so I could easily revert back to the 4.6.4 kernel.
After the failure described above I shut down the guest, restored the vdi, rebooted the guest and mouse integration was working again. None of the settings for the guest were changed at all.

I will do a quick test. Was this the Cinnamon or the Mate edition? And anything else I should know?

Tried a couple of times to install it, but the installer always aborted with a Python trace back. If you can make a virtual machine available to download I could take a look, but before we try that, have you checked that you can reproduce the problem with a freshly installed virtual machine?
No I haven't tried it on a freshly installed Mint Debian guest.
I have tried it on two different 32-bit Mint Debian Guests - one on my main machine and the other on my test/hot spare. I get the same failure in both. This is probably not surprising as they're both maintained to the same level from the Mint repos and backports. As mentioned in the original description, this only happens on the 32-bit version of LMDE 2. I also run a 64-bit version on both machines and they are fine once the Guest Additions are re-installed.
I shall try a fresh install of a 32-bit LMDE 2 within the next few days and post a further update with what I find.
Thank you for your help so far.

You could also take a look at why a fresh installation fails at the disk partitioning stage. I don't feel like debugging Linux Mint (my job is debugging VirtalBox), but if you can work out how to get past that it might be faster for both of us than uploading and downloading an image.

I created a fresh LMDE 2 Guest and installed from the ISO provided by Mint. I had no errors during the install, so I'm afraid i was not able to re-produce the partitioning error. For the install I booted from the live cd and then took the Install option. I let it default for the disk partitioning and everything was fine. Once installed I ran the following tests : It shipped with 3.1.6.7-ckt-1 kernel and GA's worked fine with that. I then upgraded to the latest LTS kernel, 3.1.6.36-1 and that also was OK.
I then upgraded to 4.7.2 and I again got the problem with mouse integration. I should add that at this point I had not upgraded *ANY* other packages, they were all still at their original install levels.
I have added an attachment of a video capture of the shutdown sequence of the freshly installed system running with the 4.7.2 kernel which appears to show an error message related to VBoxClient.

Got Mint installed (I increased the RAM and that may have been the solution), but I can't find the 4.7.2 kernel either in the Betsy nor the Jessie back-ports (the last has 4.7.0). Where did you get it from? And did you update the headers packages as well as the image package? If not, please do that and re-install the Additions just in case.
Yes, the headers were installed. With backports added, in Synaptic the package entry is linux-image-4.7.0-0.bpo.1-686-pae-unsigned
and the version is 4.7.2-bpo8+1
Once installed a uname -a shows as 4.7.0-0.bpo1-686-pae#1 SMP Debian 4.7.2-bpo8+1 (2016-09-07) i686 GNU/Linux

Will take a look. In the meantime, just in case, could you try running
$ sudo /sbin/rcvboxadd setup
on the guest and then attach (again) all /var/log/VBox*.log and /var/log/vbox*.log files?

I've attached the latest copies of the log files, as requested.
When I ran the rcvboxadd I got the following error message : Cannot create /etc/depmod.d/vboxvideo-upstream.conf : Directory non-existant
so not sure if that worked correctly ? Obviously you will be able to tell from the logs.
Thank you.

The 4.7.2-bpo8+1 version of the kernel has now been replaced on backports by 4.7.5-1~bpo8+1
I've now installed that on my freshly built system from a couple of days ago and the problem still exists, even after re-installing GA's. I've posted another set of log files for this latest install as well.
Note : The 64-bit version of the latest 4.7.5-1~bpo8+1 kernel works fine, so the problem with mouse integration is still confined just to the 32-bit version.

Reproduced. Seems to be a duplicate of #15913. I will add you to the CC list for that ticket.

I noticed in the problem description for 15913 that one of the required factors for this problem was not having I/O APIC enabled.
I enabled that and re-booted my test guest and indeed mouse integration now works. I did re-install GA's just to be on the safe side but everything is now OK.
Thank you for you help, much appreciated.
Note : I should have added in the original problem description that the guest was being upgraded from the 4.6.4 kernel, where mouse integration worked fine.
