Description
HI I am running a Mac OSX host version 5.1.6
I have a Fedora 23 guest with Guest Additions installed.
When the machine finishes booting and gets to the login screen, the screen no longer refreshes.
If I then unfocus the VirtualBox vm window the screen will do a refresh but again freezes when I enter back in.
The small preview window in the VirtualBox manager window appears to be working just fine and refreshes in real time.
This is very similar to the ticket https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/15511 however the below ticket is for Oracle Linux / RHEL, which has an older version of Xorg. This was supposed to be fixed in the version I have 1.18.4
Any one help?

After further inspection, this would only appear to affect the login screen. You can "blindly" login and then it works without fault.

Please try a current test build<1>. This sounds like a known problem where Fedora uses Xwayland for the log-in screen but not for the actual desktop, and forget to make update notification work. Most physical graphics cards do not need the notification. We should probably file a bug with them, but they will hopefully notice at some point that the new Qemu graphics emulation has the same issue.

Just to clarify: it is enough to install a test build of the Guest Additions in the affected virtual machine. You do not need to reinstall VirtualBox on your host system.

Not real help, but I've seen it happening for a couple of (minor) versions now. And it's not just Linux guests, it's everything. Not sure if it's a bug or they did it intentionally to minimize re-drawing of the screen?
I wouldn't say in my case "when it doesn't have the focus", more of a "the VM window is 'hidden' behind other apps' windows". As soon as you switch to the VM window, you'll see the last screen and after less than 1/2 sec. it will refresh.
