WinXP x64 Start Menu Freezes
Reported by: | Jonathan Graves | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | guest additions | Version: | VirtualBox 2.0.2 |
Keywords: | Cc: | ||
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Linux |
Description
Host: Kubuntu Hardy, Kernel: 2.6.24-19, Processor: AMD Opteron 1222, Motherboard: Tyan S2925 (Tomcat n3400B), Physical Memory: 4GB, Video Memory: 512MB,
Virtualbox: xVM 2.0.2-36488_Ubuntu_hardy, Guest: Windows XP Professional x64, Base Memory: 1024MB, Video Memory: 64MB, ACPI: Enabled, IO APIC: Enabled, VT-x/AMD-v: Enabled,
When I click on the Start Menu it displays under intensified and all Start Menu functions are froze for a couple minutes. When it finally displays properly and I choose a sub menu it does the same thing with the sub menu. After I use the Start Menu once it freezes up totally until I reboot. Everything else on the desktop works fine (i.e My Computer, My Documents). Yesterday when I first installed VirtualBox the mouse was jerky when selecting Start Menu items. After installing Service Pack 2 the menu started freezing.
Today I completely removed Virtualbox (partitions, everything) and performed a fresh install. The same problem still exists. I believe the problem might have something to do with the guest additions because I was able to access the start menu before I installed the guest additions. After I installed the guest additions it showed up. As soon as I opened a sub menu (i.e. Control Panel) the start menu becomes under intensified and freezes.

Upate:
I forgot, I use 32 bit version.
Workaround:
When guest freezes (but IMO problem only concern display/refresh of guest screen) I choose: Menu->Machine->Close...->Save the machine state.
After I resume guest system and all works OK, until next reboot/shutdown of host.
I dont' know why it helps

I have similiar problem: Host type: Debian GNU/Linux(on laptop) Guest type: Windows XP 32bit Virtualbox 2.0.2(XP image create on 1.6.x)
- booting Debian in Kernel 2.6.24. 2.booting XP under Virtualbox
- guest system freeze...
- reset buttom doesn't work, and close window to run it again, then it's OK.
Sometimes guest system network will not work.

Please could you attach a VBox.log file of a session after such a freeze occurred?

You are right, the log files confirm your presumption. Closing this one.
I have similar problem:

Two different machines and operating systems (Vista and XP). I observed:
