Sound stops working after playing a game

Description (last modified by )
I'm using VirtualBox 2.2.4 on Vista Home Basic with Debian 5.0 as a guest.
If I switch away from the virtual machine to play a game such as Half Life 2, then when I come back to the VM, sound doesn't work. As far as the guest is concerned, the sound is going _somewhere_, and there are no errors; the virtual machine is simply silent.
If I close the virtual machine, and save the state, then immediately start the virtual machine again, sound comes back and everything is normal (until the next time...)

I'm afraid I'm seeing this again. It manifests itself in two ways:
- Whenever a Steam window is in the foreground, sound from VirtualBox cuts out. Quitting and restarting Steam stops this behaviour -- for a while.
- Sound from VirtualBox stops completely, and I have to suspect/resume the guest (or otherwise restart VirtualBox) in order to get sound back.

I'm using a 32-bit linux guest (w/ ALSA) with a Win7 64-bit host and started experiencing this bug after upgrading to VirtualBox 4.1.2, from 4.0.8. Happens roughly 1/3 times I start Steam or a Steam app. Starting Steam also tends to result in guest applications becoming crashy (mostly apps trying to output audio) and sometimes results in the whole guest locking up (although Virtualbox itself is still responsive).

Please reopen if still relevant with a recent VirtualBox release.
