Got a similar problem, but on my machine sound does completely not work. Downgraded to VBox 3.1.2 where it works (with delay-bug). After upgrading back to 3.1.4 it doesnt play any sounds via pulseaudio. OS: Debian Lenny, Architecture: AMD64, installed via debian package.

Fixed in SVN, the fix will be included in the next maintenance release. Workaround is to use another sound backend than PulseAudio, for instance ALSA.

ALSA doesn't work too in fedora. Sound in alsa also lagged. With alsa-pulseaudio no sound at all. With disabled plugin sound exist but lagged.
In sum there is no sound in 3.1.4 =(.
