USB disk drives greyed out in virtualbox 3.1.6

I can see the attached USB devices bit they are all grayed out. I use Mac OS X 10.5.8.

I have 2 usb drives one Imation APOLLO 320 GB and other one Western Digital My Book 1 TB Though Virtualbox has detected these two they are greyed out and I cannot mount them

I experience this as well.

opensuse 11.1 linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop x86_64 Windows XP sp3 VirtualBox 3.1.8

Yes, I read the FAQ, and the manual, and the wiki, and searched the forum. I tried all of the suggestions mentioned in those places.

Detected USB devices are shown in the VM's USB popup but are grayed out as unavailable. This was not a problem on earlier versions of VBox; I believe the USB ports were available in v3.1.6, v3.1.4 for sure.

Another odd aspect is that the USB ports ARE available in opensuse 11.2. (I cannot upgrade the 11.1 hosts because of a Samba defect in 11.2.)
