Cannot successfully complete a scan for new hardware

Component: | other | Version: | VirtualBox 3.1.8 |
Keywords: | Windows Server 2008 Standard Nested Paging | Cc: | |
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Linux |
Description (last modified by )
This issue affects several different machines and Windows operating systems. On a Linux 10.04 host with two guests, one guest has no problems while the other guest hangs. The one with problems is a Windows Server 2008 Standard machine and the one that works is Windows SBS 2008 Server. On another machine with Ubuntu 10.04 as the host and one Windows XP guest, the guest aborts and restarts. Just tested a Windows XP guest on a Windows XP X64 host and the VM aborted and restarted. The same symptoms were displayed when the Ubuntu 10.04 hosts were on Ubuntu 9.10.
This issue prevents testing Virtio networking because the system performs a hardware scan.

Still persists. Wasn't fixed in 4.0.4 and still persists in 4.0.6.

Tested with VirtualBox 4.0.8. Still the same problem. The guest system crashes and restarts. Guest is Windows XP 32 bit.

The way the VM sticks on the XP loading screen after the freeze with the redline makes me think of the bug with nested paging along while back.

This seems to be an unresolvable problem with the ICH8 sata host emulation.
its pretty old https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/2309

Just tested again using VirtualBox v4.2. On a new Windows XP 32 bit installation, Linux 12.04 host, the hardware scan completed successfully. On the same Windows Server 2008 standard machine that I used initially but now using Linux 12.04 host the scan also succeeded. I see that someone posted that the problem still exists in v4.2 but for me it appears to be corrected.

did you place the bootdrive on the sata controller
that was the only time scan for new hardware ever "loses" the drive and crashes/bsods/freezes in 3.x+

Sorry. The Windows Server 2008 machine is using SATA and it worked. I had forgot to put the XP machine onto the SATA controller. Once I did that the hardware scan failed.
