virtualbox does damage to networking that persists although the OS was re-installed

Description
I was using the lastet release of virtualbox with the lastest release of linux mint. Various parts of the gui started malfunctioning, so I installed ubuntu server karmic. The network bridge interface was still there. After hacking away at it, I got it to disappear from ifconfig, but I still can't access my network. What did you do to my computer?
