Usb causing host shutdown problem

Description
Anytime I run a virtual machine of various guest OS and insert a usb mobile broadband dongle to connect to the internet the dongle will not work. Then when i finish with the vm and try to shutdown the host machine the screen gets as far as "Windows is shutting down" and remains that way indefinitely.
