Ubuntu 12.04 guest on Win7 host with ATI graphics: 3D flickers in full screen mode

Reported by: occor Owned by:
Component: 3D support Version: VirtualBox 4.2.10
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Windows

Description

Summary: When running with 3D acceleration in full screen with an Ubuntu 12.04 host in Win7 using the latest ATI Catalyst drivers (13.1) and VBox 4.2.10.

To reproduce:

  • Start Ubuntu with Unity and 3D acceleration
  • enter VirtualBox fullscreen mode
  • start glxgears or most other OpenGL windows

Results: Screen will flicker black at launch. Will also flicker black whenever the window is moved. Window contents display some of the time but not always, otherwise window is black.

Here is a horribly blurry video of the bug: http://youtu.be/3rarXDuSYnE

As the video's framerate is significantly lower than 60Hz, the flicker appears much shorter than when observed in person.

After messing a bit more:

Mouse down on title bar when contents are displaying: Flicker Mouse up: Nothing, window is blank

Mouse down when window is blank: Nothing Mouse up: Nothing

Mouse down when window is blank: Nothing Move mouse: Window moves but contents are blank. Mouse up: Window starts drawing contents

Mouse down on title bar when contents are showing: Flicker Move window slightly: contents show in original location, window moves with mouse but shows black rectangle. Mouse up: Flicker, window displays contents in correct location.

Also, starting the application seems to always show the contents or always not show the contents, depending on some internal state of the vbox drivers, indicating that this is not a race condition.

Could you please check if the issue is fixed with VBox 4.3 with 4.3 Additions?
