Ubuntu 13.10 install DVD (32bit and 64bit ISO) crashes VBox 4.3

Description
Machine is a 2008 iMac Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM. It boots a Debian 7 image ok (which existed prior to upgrade to latest version of VirtualBox).
When a new VM is created, configured as Ubuntu (either 32bit or 64bit with appropriate install DVD), the VM crashes upon trying to boot from the DVD.
