Guests cannot FTP outbound to external FTP servers on the Internet over NAT

Description
Windows, Linux and Solaris X86 guests in Virtualbox on OS X cannot FTP to external FTP servers on the Internet over NAT and do directory listings. FTP login works fine, but you get immediately disconnected the moment you try to run "dir" or "ls" to list remote directory contents.
Running Mac OS X - same problem on versions 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9. Direct FTP's and remote directory listings from the host O/S works 100%. I have tried various Virtualbox versions as well.
