This is a problem/bug/feature with Qt actually - it reads default brain damaged GTK3 settings which say to hide the aforementioned icons.

Please, close this bug report as INVALID.

A solution is to run these two commands:

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons true
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/interface/buttons_have_icons true
