Mac host, XP guest, 100% VM CPU when network connected, no detectable hit on performance

Reported by: gkholman Owned by:
Component: network Version: VirtualBox 4.3.20
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Mac OS X

Description

My XP Guest, running nothing except Task Manager (reporting only System Idle) runs at 100% CPU according to Mac status. When I turn off VM menu item Devices/Network/Connect Network Adapter, usage becomes negligible. When I turn it on again, within 5 seconds it is back to 100%. No apps are running ... just switching it off and on is all that is needed.

Same for VBox 4.3.18 and 4.3.20.

Real performance doesn't appear to be affected, but the 100% load is triggering high fan on the Mac, so it is heating it up somewhat. A Google search brought up ideas such as reinstalling latest VBox additions, turning off the network for a short period of time and starting again ... nothing seems to relieve the load.

Tonight I switched the network connection from NAT to Bridged and the consumption dropped dramatically. It still isn't as low as at rest with the network connection turned off, but at least my Mac fan has turned itself down and it doesn't sound like an aircraft taxiing. I switched it back to NAT and the consumption returned to >100%, then switched it back to Bridged and it dropped off.

You can close this ticket.

It turns out I had two spool jobs in the XP print queue, and the networked printer was turned off. Why this issue would be affected by NAT/Bridged I have no idea, but when I killed the print queue the cycles returned to normal when connected through NAT.

I apologize for taking anyone's time with this ticket.
