"Lost Mode Switch?" Ubuntu Gutsy ISO boot

Description
Reporting at Klaus' request. Was testing to see if Gutsy still started at 800x600 res in 1.5.6. First boot, for some reason, gnome-panel did not launch. Rather than looking into it, shut down machine, tried a 2nd boot. On 2nd boot, the screenshot attached was the result. No further activity. Seems to pick up a res greater than 1024x768 while booting BTW.
Third boot, booted normally. 800x600, gnome-panel, everything typical. So, this is not at all reproducible.

Er. Ignore the "rez greater than 1024x768" bit. Meant equal to 1024x768 - and anyway, must have imagined it. Don't see any hint of it in the log.
