#13788 closed defect (obsolete)
Poor interaction between FreeBSD kernel and VirtualBox IDE
Reported by: | grobe0ba | Owned by: | |

Component: | virtual disk | Version: | VirtualBox 4.3.20 |
Keywords: | Cc: | ||
Guest type: | BSD | Host type: | all |
Description
Due to the implementation of the FreeBSD kernel, IDE support within VirtualBox is quite glitchy, and prone to outright failure.
The FreeBSD OS template should be changed to defaulting to a SCSI controller and disk, which provides considerably better reliability and performance compared to IDE.

Do you have some pointers for describing these special requirements of the FreeBSD kernel? The VirtualBox ATA interface works well for a broad area of guests. And bugs can be fixed. Actually we would rather consider to use the AHCI (SATA) controller as default storage controller for FreeBSD.
