VBox sometimes segfaults when inserting a virtual cd

Reported by: Philip Seeger Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.3.18
Keywords: virtual cd insert crash segfault Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Linux

Description

VirtualBox vms tend to crash so often when inserting a virtual cd, it appears to be a rather dangerous feature. This has happened with many different vms, randomly - I don't see a pattern when or why it would happen. This is just one example.

Scenario: Debian host running VirtualBox 4.3.18, Fedora guest running. Tried to insert guest additions virtual cd (Devices - Insert Guest Additions CD image), error message that insert failed and if I wanted to force unmount, force unmount. Then tried to mount /dev/cdrom (success) and tried to access it (i/o error, also i/o errors in dmesg), umount cdrom. Reinsert and repeat process, same result. In guest, eject /dev/cdrom, then reinsert cd image - vm gone instantly.

dmesg on host: [4736764.501647] show_signal_msg: 6 callbacks suppressed [4736764.501653] EMT-0[13655]: segfault at 80 ip 00007f55158203c9 sp 00007f55523ea808 error 4 in VBoxDD.so[7f5515794000+16f000]

VM log attached.

This is unrelated to the guest system, it also happens in the VirtualBox boot menu (after pressing F12).

VirtualBox 4.3.18 is rather old, you should try 4.3.26.

Also, when shutting down a vm, it segfaults in the same way if a virtual cd is still inserted.

Version 4.3.18 is in the Debian Jessie repository, I could try to install 4.3.26 from the experimental repository...

You should always test the latest official Oracle build before reporting bugs here. To add the right Oracle repository to your OS, read here

Replying to mhanor:

I have installed VirtualBox from the experimental repository (currently 4.3.26).

I have not had any segfaults yet, I'll get back to you if I do.
