Description
Running the "setsid unity" command should restart unity without going back to the lock screen. This is not the case when running Ubuntu 14.04 with Virtualbox. When using virtualbox, you are kicked out to the lock screen and it appears that all windows are closed. I also tried with Virtualbox 5.0 RC1 and same thing happens there.

This was discussed on the forums yesterday<1> and the conclusion (shared by Rob) was that this is an issue with Unity on Ubuntu 14.04. I will close this ticket, please re-open if necessary.
I guess this happens only if you start the VM with 3D acceleration enabled in the VM settings, can you confirm this?
