Intel HD Audio muted (regression introduced with 4.3.22 for Windows guests)

Description
Using a fresh installation of Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 (I have only tested the 64 bit versions), using the default audio controller (Intel HDA), the guest audio is muted. To fix it, I have to make an adjustment to the sound volume, from the guest's sound control applet. The fix is persistent across VM reboots/shutdowns. It doesn't seem to occur with a Linux guest (I have tried Ubuntu 15.04 64 bit).
I assume this is a VirtualBox issue, because VirtualBox 4.3.20 is the last version that works without having to make the sound volume adjustment, inside the guest. I assume that VirtualBox makes an incomplete initialization of the emulated audio device, which is corrected by the OS, through the guest audio driver.
I can reproduce reproduce the issue with all builds from 4.3.22 up to 5.0 RC1.
I think you can close this. Newer builds (such as 5.0.1 r102010) are free of this issue.
