High CPU usage and guest crash

Hi

first, I have a windows XP SP2 with VBox 1.5.6. The problem occurs with 1.5.4 too. I have crashes on windows guest start-up, even during installation. I cannot use VBox. The problem may come from my system, but I have not clue about the cause. I tried to uninstall and reinstall VBox, different version, but still the same problem. Find attached the logs file.

Another issue: Having a windows guest cause HIGH cpu load: 1 full core per virtual machines: 50% cpu usage cause I have a Intel dual core CPU.

Setting the CPU affinity of the virtual machine (virtualbox.Exe) to CPU 0 fix the problem immediately, but not on CPU 1 on witch the problem remain.

I tried with virtual box 1.5.4 and 1.5.6 with the same problem. Note that I have no problem using the same virtual machine on a single core computer, or if i disable the dual core on my host computer.

Hope somebody can help.

This may be related. I have Ubuntu Gutsy host running Debian etch guest and when I start the guest, CPU load on host goes to close to 100% and remains there even when guest is idle. This is with Virtualbox 1.5.6 and dual CPU Dell. I don't remember seeing this problem with some earlier version of Virtualbox.

I have the same issue with Linux guest : Ubuntu Server and Mandriva Spring 2008.

I will try to build the last version of VirtualBox OSE to see if there is any difference.

I have the exact same problem - 50% processor use all the time (on a dual-core system, so that's a 100%, too).

Host OS: Windows XP SP2 Desired OS in VM: Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) I mount the Ubuntu 8.04 ISO image, and start the VM. It boots fine, I select the language, and keyboard settings, id creates the partitions, etc, etc. The installation continues, and at some point it jams - it does not crash, it just hangs there, processor use at 100%. Interestingly, VirtualBox still works )so I can reset and everything) - only the VM jams... But - in the end, the only way to move on is to reset the machine and not use VirtualBox...

I don't know whether this helps or not, but I noticed that the processor usage goes up when the disk is in use - I can barely hear the hard disk seeking, but the CPU usage is at 100% (it happens often). Also, the VM disk and the Ubuntu ISO image are on the same HDD.

Using 1.6, the ubuntu 8.04 installer passed the mark where it hung previously (see report above). So, this bug is fixed for me.

One thing to note is this: at the end of the ubuntu installer performs some cleanup - this takes a very long time, again, CPU usage being very high. So, I guess the virtual disks are far from being good performance-wise... Thanks.

I confirm that after uninstall the 1.5.x and install the 1.6, everything seems to work correctly. I don't have anymore crashes, and no more high CPU usage.
