vboxmanage guestcontrol never returns / hangs

We are running the following command in an automated test environment:

vboxmanage guestcontrol name_of_vm execute --image /bin/ls --verbose --wait-exit

It prints out "0%...10%...20%...30%...40%...50%...60%...70%...80%...90%...100%", but never returns (kind of like this ticket: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/10616). We run /bin/ls to determine when the virtual machine has finished loading so we can run a test in the machine with another vboxmanage command.

We are running VirtualBox 4.2.32 on Xubuntu 14.04 with a virtual machine that is also Xubuntu 14.04. It should be noted that this also happens with VirtualBox 4.3.30

pentagonik, don't you mean the latest test build? The 5.2.18 release didn't contain the fixes, it needs GAs r124533 or later.
