Description
I have the same problem as described in https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/14361. I see "DSound: CreateCaptureBuffer E_FAIL" and "DSound: playback start E_ACCESSDENIED" in the logs.
VirtualBox v5.0.8 (it is not available in the version list for some reason).

There is some Symantec product (antivirus?) installed on your system. It might cause this problem.
It would be good if you could somehow test with disabled antivirus.

I'll try, though I doubt that is the cause, because sometimes I'm able to get the sound working (after a few restarts and toggling audio in VM's settings on and off).

Unfortunately, I cannot disable Symantec on this machine -- stopping it requires a password, which I do not have. I've checked Symantec's logs and did not find anything suspicious, though.

OK,
Windows 7 x64 Host and audio no longer audiable with Win 7 x64 or Ubuntu x86 guests at least. Host controller 'Intel HD Audio' or 'ICH AC97' makes no difference.
It started from a version after 4.3.8, I first noticed when I tried using v4.3.24 and it is not working today with 5.0.14 r105127.
As far as the guest is concerned it is fine. You can see the green vertical bar jigging up and down in the windows guest volume slider.

I have the same problem on windows 7 with virtual box 5.1.8. As soon as I start the Linux guest vm, the audio on the host windows systems stops working.

@pentagonik:
Duplicate? Where is the duplicate Ticket? You don't really mean the Ticket 14361??
In 14361 user "noname1" was told that his problem is another, and he should open a new ticket!
I got the same Error-Message: "DSound: Starting playback failed with E_ACCESSDENIED", with Win7/64 Host and Linux-Mint-Guest, VirtualBox v5.1.22, after restoring the VM from Savestate

@joemeier Please try the latest 5.2 test build >= 120822 located here: Testbuilds.
We don't support 5.1 anymore.

Replying to pentagonik:
We don't support 5.1 anymore.
You must certainly mean 5.0.x, right? Support which ended in 2017/05...
Please attach VBoxHardening.log too (from the same directory where the VBox.log is located).
