Intel HD audio driver fails to boot
Reported by: | kived | Owned by: | |

Component: | audio | Version: | VirtualBox 5.0.8 |
Keywords: | Cc: | ||
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Linux |
Description ¶
Tested in VirtualBox 5.0.4 (Ubuntu-distributed) and 5.0.8 (Oracle-distributed via PPA) on Ubuntu 15.10. Using the Intel HD Audio driver results in a failure to start the VM:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Kivy Windows 7.
General failure - DON'T USE THIS!!!. (VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE).
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: ConsoleWrap
Interface: IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}
This happens to me in Windows guests, though I don't think that matters as it never got to a POST screen. Switching to ICH AC97 fixes the issue. These VMs worked without issue before upgrading to 5.0.

Unfortunately this error message is not visible in the VBox.log file. Could you also attach the VBoxSVC.log file which can be found in /home/ryan/.VirtualBox or /home/ryan/.config/VirtualBox? Please make sure that the most recent VM session failed in the way you reported.

That's odd. I checked the log beforehand to find the error, maybe I attached the wrong file by mistake. Since then I reinstalled my OS to switch to an SSD, and I can no longer reproduce the issue.
