Enabling Guest Host Additions Breaks Linux guest OS

Description
I'm Unbuntu 8.04 (Hardy) amd 64 version. I've installed various Linux guests mostly Red Hat 3 and 4s. When I install the guest host additions (the compile is successful) the guest host mouse and video have problems. When the logon screen is shown the lower portion is missing (as if the scree resolution is wrong). When I logon, the gnome start/task bar (which is at the bottom) is missing. The mouse does seem to track correctly.
