This seems like a permission issue with the VirtualBox Manager preferences file. The file is located in "$HOME/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml". Make sure you're the owner and you have modify permissions. If you don't have access to this folder or the folders above that, you may have more problems down the road. You should get it fixed.

Great. For future reference, it's usually better and faster, if problems like this one (configuration) get first addressed in the forums (https://forums.virtualbox.org/). More than 95% of the issues are resolved over there, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements.
I guess we can close this ticket as "WorksForMe", or something similar?

Yes close the ticket. I assumed it was a bug because I did not have an issue in v4. I have another issue bug 11455 that I added to an old issue that was reopened. Do I need to post a new bug for my issue on bug 11455.

I can't close the ticket, I'm a simple user like you. I believe that someone will do shortly.
But, one of the reasons that I directed you to the forums is that for every comment you post here, every developer and their mother gets an e-mail, which can be reaaally disruptive. So, can we continue this conversation in the forums please? That's where the discussions are supposed to be happening. So, let's talk about #11455 there.
