Description
Somewhere in either 1.5.4 or 1.5.6 the connectivity to my USB scanner (HP 4100C)broke. I thought that it occurred in v 1.6.0 but I reverted to v1.5.2 and it works wonderfully. I am running WinXp SP2 as the host and Win2K as the guest. Tell me if I can provide more info to help with this. I know the issue exists in v 1.5.6 & 1.6.0. I can test 1.5.4 if needed.

Can you enable the USB 2.0 (EHCI) controller in your VBox settings and try again with 1.6.0?

Did it. No help. I find that before I start VirtualBox 1.6.0 my scanner appears under imaging devices. After I start he VM the scanner disappears from under imaging devices. I see the scanner on the VirtualBox menu (Devices, USB devices) but it never connects. And if I click on it it doesn't connect. I shutdown the VM but the scanner never reappears under imaging devices but my PC about freezes so I must press and hold power button on the PC.
I uninstalled 1.6.0, rebooted, installed 1.5.6-1, added a new VM using my vdi from my 1.5.6-1 install earlier, configured USB on this VM, and rebooted. Now I started the VM while watching the device manager and the scanner was under imaging devices then when the VM came up it appeared under Universal Serial bus controllers and the VM automatically connected to it and I could use it. Once I shutdown the VM the scanner moved back to imaging devices in device manager which it didn't do under 1.6.0. All is working well under 1.5.6-1.
Just a note that the VM under 1.6.0 was created in 1.6.0 and had VB additions 1.6.0 installed. The VM under 1.5.6-1 was created in 1.5.6-1 and had VB additions 1.5.6-1 installed.

Please reopen if still relevant with VBox 4.1.6.
I'm mistaken, it's ok up to 1.5.6.1. This broke in 1.6.0
