Description
After upgrading virtualbox (including the guest additions) on my guest from 5.0.12 to any higher version it occasionally happens that xorg can't find a screen. The details (including log messages) are reported in this NixOS issue:
https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/16641
An intertesting message in /var/log/X.0.log
is the following:
(II) vboxvideo: kernel driver found, not loading.

Hi Michael, thanks for you response. My OS actually removed the explicit installation of the modesetting
driver with the explanation that it's now part of xserver by default. Note that I'm running X.Org X Server 1.17.4. I'm going to find out if the modesetting
driver really is part of 1.17.4.

Michael, after enabling the modesetting driver the problem appears to have been solved. Thanks very much for your help. This ticket can be closed now.

Thank you for the feedback, closing.
It looks to me like you don't have the modesetting X.Org driver installed. This should be a standard component of X.Org 1.17 and is needed to use the vboxvideo kernel driver. As the message you quoted says, the vboxvideo X.Org driver and the vboxvideo kernel driver cannot be used at the same time. Please check and let me know.
