custom vbox icons revert second time vm is run

I would like to give my VMs custom icons, to distinguish between them in the Dock (tray) and in the app switcher (which for all but the selected app shows only the icon)
In macOS you can give a file or app a custom icon via the Finder by opening the Get Info window, selecting the icon, and pasting a new one on top of it.
If I give one of my _.vbox_ VM files a custom icon via Get Info > paste the new icon, VirtualBox reverts it to the default light blue cube after on the second open. That is, I apply a custom icon, open the VM, shut down the VM, and open the VM, and while it's opening for the second time the icon reverts.
