No sound from any guest OS

Description
I never get any sound from guest OSs. I have tried many Windows and Linux guests with the same result. The Host OS is Windows 8.1. This problem has existed for many versions of VirtualBox

Can you check if the host's default device is actually the digital output instead of the analog one? For which one do you have physical speakers connected to?

The default device is "Realtek HD Audio" which has the physical speakers connected. Audio directly from the Host OS works fine.

This defect is still unresolved by the latest VirtualBox release (6.0.4 as of the time of this writing). There has been no traction on this defect for the past 17 months! Is this ever going to be investigated and fixed?

@keith.f.kelly: We only can fix issue on a best effort basis for non-paying users. Also, without providing any further information (see here) there is not much we can do.
