Installing Extension Pack trashes Linux MDM Login options

There is something about installing the VirtualBox Extension Pack (5.1.28) that wipes out my MDM Login menu in my Linux Mint 17.2 / XFCE / Wmaker VM.

I updated my Windows 10 Pro machine to VirtualBox-5.1.28-117968-Win.exe and installed Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.1.28-117968.vbox-extpack in my Linux VM. This trashed my ability to log into any of my desktops other than my original XFCE Desktop.

My MDM Login menu worked as expected under 5.1.22 but exhibited the same problem in earlier extension packs.

This also happened when I tried to upgrade VirtualBox to v5.0.24 - I didn’t report it then. I just assumed a later version (5.1.22) would fix the issue.

I run VirtualBox 5.0.16 under Windows 10 Home Premium. One of my VM's is Linux Mint 17.2. I run multiple desktops under Linux Mint 17.2, XFCE and WMaker, my favorite being Wmaker.

I tried updating VirtualBox to version 5.1.6. Installing 5.1.6 Extensions in my Linux VM trashes my ability to log into any of my desktops other than my original XFCE Desktop. My MDM Login menu works under 5.1.6 until after I run VBoxLinuxAdditions. Something in that installation process trashes MDM.

This also happened when I tried to upgrade VirtualBox to v5.0.24 - I didn’t report it then. I just assumed a later version would fix the issue.

The last version that works properly for me is 5.0.16 running under Windows 10 Home.

• The Extension Pack (ExtPack) get installed on the host and it has to match the VirtualBox version. It provides functionality such as USB2-3, Webcam, VRDP, PXE, PCI passthrough on Linux hosts, VDI Encryption. You have to download it and install it separately from the main VirtualBox program, due to its license.
• The Guest Additions (GAs) get installed on the guest and it would be good to match the VirtualBox version, for anything other than enhanced graphics support. It provides functionality such as shared folders, shared clipboard, drag and drop, pointer sharing, enhanced graphics support. You do not have to download it separately from the main VirtualBox program, since it comes bundled with it.

In your case you're referring to the GAs, aren't you?

You're absolutely correct. I should have said "Guest Additions"!

Socratis is absolutely correct. It's installing the 5.1.28 Guest additions in my Linux VM that's trashing my ability to choose any MDM Login option other than XFCE.

I ran "mdmsetup" in the VM and found WMaker was still listed as a desktop.

I also noticed on bootup that the MDM Login screen size had been reduced from 1024x768 to 800x600. I'm assuming this was another ramification of installing the newer Guest Additions for 5.1.28?

Should I build a Linux Mint 17.2 VM (on 5.1.22) running XFCE and WMaker to submit for testing (and how would I submit it)?

I don't believe it would be necessary to submit a built VM in order to demonstrate the problem, the step-by-step instructions should be more than enough...

This bug report needs to be extended to include VirtualBox-5.2.0-118431-Win and it's extension pack.
