#17290 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Network popup should not show 'Connect Network Adapter' when already connected

Description

I find it confusing that when I right click on the network icon at the bottom of the VM it has an option 'Connect Network Adapter' when the adapter is already connected. I had no idea what that meant and thought it meant to connect a new network adapter. I didn't immediately realize it actually toggles the network adapter state and couldn't figure out how to disable the adapter (I went into Settings > Network but the enable network adapter option is grayed out).

I think you should change the 'Connect Network Adapter' popup entry to show that wording only when the adapter is disconnected. When it is connected show 'Disconnect Network Adapter' instead. That would be similar to what VMware does in Workstation and I think more intuitive for users.

The menu entry's icon already has a trivial change depending on the state but I'm sure I'll forget it.

That would be against human interface guidelines. Checkboxes must have static text that doesn't depend on the state of the checkbox.

@vushakov I think you closed this prematurely. Think of it from my perspective, that does not look anything like a checkbox. It looks like a menu entry with an icon. I suggest reopening this and either make it a checkbox or alternate the text and leave the icon static.

@quiettime, vushakov is right. Menus (and checkboxes) that are enabled/disabled do not modify their text to indicate their state. They just show/hide the checkmark. See all other properly setup applications in your computer. And by properly I mean that follow proper HIGs (Human Interface Guidelines).

I've attached a screenshot of both the on and off state so you can see what I mean. You say that's a checkbox and respectfully I disagree. It looks like a menu icon. I just don't think it's intuitive, which is why I suggested an actual checkbox or do what VMware does and change the text.

Yeah, I forgot about the Windows interface. I do have a Windows host, but I'm mostly running the OSX version, and over there it's a checkbox.
