#17479 new defect
Ubuntu host does not start after 5.1.32 Guest Additions installed
Reported by: | ar123 | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | 3D support | Version: | VirtualBox 5.1.32 |
Keywords: | Cc: | ||
Guest type: | Linux | Host type: | Linux |
Description
The issue is the same as in https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17467 in 5.1.32: Ubuntu starts, but then stops at some moment after upgrading VirtualBox from 5.1.30 in 16.04 host to 5.1.32 and the guest additions to 5.1.32. The guest OS is 16.04 as well. The only way to load the system is to uncheck the option "Enable 3D Acceleration". All features (with unchecked "Enable 3D Acceleration") work: buffer, sharing folders etc. There was a recent update of mesa library from 17.2.2 to 17.2.4 at the same time of 5.1.30->5.1.32, can they be related?

There were newer test builds that were addressing this issue. Did you try them?
Duplicate of #17463 (different versions, same reason).

Yes, the issue is fixed in the test build (VBoxGuestAdditions_5.1.33-120348.iso). Thanks.

I have this problem too. I tried Ubuntu 16.04.3 and 17.10 and both fail to boot if 3D acceleration is enabled, even when using the latest build from the test builds page (r120361). The system almost boots, even shows the mouse cursor, but then goes into endless black screen.

@szx
Then it's not the same problem. It has the same symptoms, not the same source probably. So, if you can, please open a new thread in the Linux Guests section of the forums.

Off topic question: what is preferable place for bugs? This one or forum (https://forums.virtualbox.org/index.php)?

Well, it's not off-topic at all ;)
The forums are the first line of defense, the "triage" area. It's usually better and faster, if issues get first addressed in the VirtualBox forums. More than 95% of the issues are resolved over there, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements, and there is no need for another ticket to keep track of.

@radekz
I've already mentioned that this is a duplicate of #17463. Did you check the solution there?

The issue is fixed in 5.1.34 (I've just checked with Ubuntu 16.04 guest and 17.10 host). So this ticket can be closed.
Sorry, the host is 17.10, the guest is 16.04.
