#17889 new defect

VBox 5.2.16: Microphone not working: macOS Host, Linux/Debian Guest

Reported by: LiamF Owned by:
Component: audio Version: VirtualBox 5.2.16
Keywords: mic microphone Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Mac OS X

Description

Host: MacBook Pro, macOS El Capitan, VirtualBox 5.2.16 Guest: Linux/Debian 9 (stretch)

Audio out works. Audio in (via mic) does not. (Full disclosure: I did not test other types of audio sources.) I tried "Sound Recorder" and "Audacity." Neither worked. Audacity gives me various mic sources; I tried them all. None worked. VM log attached.

I haven't been able to find any relevant ticket that's still open. If I've missed one, I'm sure I'll be admonished and this ticket "merged."

Have you tried any other guests? I tried with a Debian 9.4.0 64-bit. I didn't install any recording programs, I just went to the Preferences » Sound » Input panel. There, I could see just fine the input level changing according to the ... input. Did you check that first?

BTW, I'm on a MacBookPro11,5, OSX 10.11.6, VirtualBox 5.2.16.

Finally, let me suggest that it's usually better and faster, if issues get first addressed in the VirtualBox forums. More than 95% of the issues are resolved over there, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements, and there is no need for another ticket to keep track of. For example, yours is most probably not a bug and someone from the developers has to deal with it and close it as "[Invalid]".

I have tried Debian 8/jessie. Same thing. If you're asking if I tried something other than Debian: no. (Had I, then this ticket wouldn't be "Debian on macOS.") The very first thing I checked was Preferences. Then I tried Sound Recorder. Then I tried Audacity. Then I twiddled with the VM settings. Then I wiped the whole VM and started from scratch. Same outcome. At this point, I was at the five-hour mark of poking, prodding, and testing. Then I moved on to the forums. After an hour of frustration there - "Sorry but you cannot use search at this time. Please try again in a few minutes." - I wiped the VM, installed yet another fresh instance, ran tests, captured logs, and moved on to opening a ticket. (Oh, and yes, I removed and reinstalled VirtualBox.)

For the record, native audio-in and audio-out under macOS is fine.

  • In the Preferences, did you see the input indicator moving?
  • Are you using the built-in microphone or are you using an external microphone?
  • When I said "go to the forums", I meant to ask your question in the forums. There are a lot more eyes there.

  • The "input indicator" remains immobile.
  • I am using the built-in mic.
  • Understood. And hoping to be a good community member, I first attempted to search before submitting a question to the forums. But with search failing ...

  1. That's not good. Did you try changing the gain?
  2. OK, that's good to know. My settings on the host are "Input volume"=75% and "Use ambient noise reduction"=Checked. Try playing with those in case that they need to.
  3. The search functionality of phpBB is not the best in the world. What you usually do is to use your favorite search engine and limit the search to the forums:
    "OSX microphone not working site:forums.virtualbox.org"
  4. Can you try any other guest? Just download a live DVD of a Linux distro and try that. I doubt it, but you never know.
