MacOSX shutdown wedges VirtualBox

Description
With a running guest, shut down the host. VirtualBox should deal with this or ask the user what to do but instead, shutdown is aborted because VirtualBox becomes unresponsive. Selecting the VirtualBox Manager or the guest system console merely gets a spinning beachball. Force quit seems the only way out and, strangely, it didn't offer to phone home with a crash dump. MacBookAir7,2 MacOSX 10.11.6 "El Capitan" VirtualBox 5.2.22 r126460 (Qt5.6.3) running guest Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS with host SD Card reader mounted via USB.
