VB issue with multiple cores for Xeon 5450

I have an "older" server running a motherboard with two Xeon 5450 (4 cores each) with 16 Gb of ram running W2016. I have installed the current version of VB and installed W7, W10 and Ubuntu (all latest versions) in respective VMs. All settings in VB work OK (as expected), except when I add more than 2 CPU cores to any VM. When that happens, CPU utilization (for the VM) goes to 100% (all cores - after a little while) the VM slows down to a crawl and/or freezes. This is most certainly not the expected behavior.
