Distorted audio in WinXP guests on Fedora 9 x86_64

Description
I previously had no problem with audio on Windows XP guests running on a 32 bit Fedora 7 host. I recently upgraded the host to 64 bit Fedora 9 to take full advantage its 4GB of memory and now my guests have very badly distorted audio. I am running VBox 1.6.4 on the new install and was also running that on the previous Fedora 7 install. Everything was installed from scratch except for my guests, those were migrated over from the previous system. But I have tried creating a brand new Windows XP guest and that also has the distorted audio. I have some Windows-only audio apps that I need to continue to use so this is a significant issue for me.
Audio is working fine otherwise on my host system. I am selecting the ICH AC97 controller and the ALSA audio driver in the VBox config.

Huh. That works. But I'd swear it didn't work before when I tried it. Oh well, I'll go with this for a while and see if it continues to work. As an aside, everything I found through a Google search when I was trying to figure this out said that VBox didn't work with Pulse, yet. How does one know where to look to get the latest and greatest info? (Rhetorical question, no need to answer.)

This is still an issue for me, running Windows 7 as guest on Mandriva Linux 2009 as host. Is this related to ticket 2580?
Try the PulseAudio backend.
