Description ¶
As initially discussed here: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?p=538336
VirtualBox has a really low video memory limitation, which seems to be intentional. This disallows 3D applications from being run. 3D support might just as well be thrown out as this gives a false sense of support.
This would have been fine late 90s or early 00s, but not today. I can for example not run 3D printer software being met with errors when opening the software: https://tiertime.com/software
I isolate software in Windows for certain purposes and run Windows on GNU/Linux as well on a second monitor. But the second scenario prevents me from doing a lot of things.
I do not ask this to run games, even if VirtualBox would allow for games to run 3D wise, this would most likely still be severely limited to input delay caused by virtualisation translation. I just want to run regular 3D applications normally. Games run just fine on Wine these days anyway since Valve started backing the project. There is no need to virtualise video games.
I hope the video memory can be uncapped or majorly increased to 1 - 2 GB+ and the driver improved to allow for modern day standard API support such as Vulkan / modern day OpenGL / DirectX 10 / 11.
