Description

Description

I am currently encountering an error whereupon the guest Kali Linux VM corrupts itself on startup. The story of which is rather confusing. I was running the VM fine until I tried to open Firefox, whereupon it began to lag. This is expected as I was running BurpSuite, Android Studio and a couple of other somewhat intensive programs in the background. However, the screen blacked out after about 30 seconds but the VM windows didn't crash or close. After a while of it being like this, I force powered off the VM and tried to restart it. This resulted in a weird error as shown in the attached screenshot everytime I load the VM.

What I've tried I tried reverting to a recent snapshot but this caused the VM to behave strangely (see screenshot of root terminal) and eventually go back to the black screen after about a minute. This is why I suspect it's a booting issue and not a hard drive issue.

What I would expect to happen VM boots fine after reverting back to the snapshot or crashes in someway with a hardware related error.

Additional Notes

  • This only seems to happen on my Kali VM and it's happen twice in the past 6 months. Virtualbox and extensions versions have not changed
  • The VM is a Kali Linux VM. My host is Windows 11 Enterprise with Virtualisation Enabled.
  • Happy to add more information on request

I'm hopefully going to get permission to upgrade my virtualbox install and extension pack to the latest LTS versions tomorrow. I'll update in here if that fixes it

Updating to virtualbox 7.0.14 and extension pack 7.0.14 does not fix this issue
