Hello
it would be nice, if VirtualBox shows the current desktop resolution and color-depth in the left-bottom-corner.

Why pollute the GUI window with such information? The session information page of the VM already contains the resolution at least.

I wholeheartedly support this particular Feature Request. I think it is valid, especially combining it with the Auto-Resizing feature already present.
Let me give an example from personal experience why I would find such functionality handy: I frequently record VBox Linux guests' activity with screencast creation software and post the screencasts online as embedded SWF videos. Since I need to comply with various web layout size restrictions, I need varying recording resolutions that may be arbitrary and non-standard (e.g. 1000x600 px). The Guest Auto-Resizing feature is a help in this direction but it requires some trial'n' error to "hit" a particular resolution, i.e. resizing, checking resolution, resizing again because you missed by a few pixels, rechecking and so on.
Concerning placement, I agree that permanent display of the current resolution in the lower-left corner of the GUI could be considered by some as "pollution of the GUI". To that effect, I instead propose displaying the resolution in the window title bar (or as an OSD effect, centered inside the window) ONLY when resizing and updating accordingly in realtime as the corner of the GUI window is dragged.
Sorry for the long comment!

A better solution is to use:
VBoxManage controlvm <name> setvideomodehint x y bpp
ScreenShot how it could be look
