Description
Ubuntu heron guest: I chose hibernate to try to test the behavior in #2824, and instead the VM exited. The VirtualBox app showed it as powered down, and when I restarted it, it booted, with no state restored as expected with hibernation.

Please add a VBox.log file of such a VM session. If the Ubuntu guest isn't accessible anymore this sounds like the guest disk partition was scrambled for some reason but I cannot imagine that. Make sure that the virtual disk is still properly attached to the VM. Actually from your description it sounds more like you did not remove the Ubuntu LiveCD from the virtual CDROM device and it starts booting from the installation CD again instead of the virtual disk. In that case just unmount the virtual CD image from the VM configuration.

Confirmed with Meerkat and Host Windows 7 also, two years later... To repeat bug:
VM powers off, as it should when hibernating; but then:
Expected: State of VM restored
What happens instead: Ubuntu gone! it asks me if I want to try it or install it
