At the time of the panic there remained in Dock an icon for the virtual machine.
Icon was too small for me to clearly distinguish its state but AFAICT it presented the familiar progress bar that Ubuntu presents whilst shutting down. Certainly the icon was mostly black with some Ubuntu 8.x colours.

Two disks:
- internal to MacBook Pro, comprising one (startup) volume:
- MBP
- USB-connected BigDisk Extreme comprising four volumes:
- Perrin
- excess
- extreme
- clone-MBP
At the time of the panic
Running visible applications
At least:
- Safari 3.2.1 (5525.27.1) in background
- VirtualBox 2.1.2 in background
- Ubuntu 8.x virtual machine in background
- Finder 10.5.8 in foreground
Finder window sidebar discloses all mounted volumes.
Other significant activities
Time Machine was backing up (probably preparing) to
/Volumes/clone-MBP
Actions in Finder
At least two windows open, one of which was a column view of
/Applications/
In the foreground window I clicked and dragged
/Applications/OpenOffice.org.app/
(a non-running application) aiming to drop it on the external volume
excess
En route to that destination, the drag passed over the volume
extreme
that hosts the (then) running virtual machine, but I did not drop there.
The unrushed drag over the sidebar icon for that volume probably caused a new Finder window to open for
extreme
Ultimately I dropped on
excess
Finder presented the usual Copy dialogue.
Some time during the copy, the panic occurred.
I pressed and held the power button to force power off.
I did not remove the USB-connected external drive.
Started Mac OS X. Alowed time for the LED of the external drive to stop flashing (presumably working with its journals) before logging in to Mac OS X.
Following log in I accepted the invitation to report the Panic to Apple, but refrained from sending the report until after opening this ticket.
Disk Utility finds no error with three of four volumes on the external drive. (The fourth, a Time Machine destination, takes an extraordinarily long time to check. I may do so later.) I'll check my startup volume MBP later.

My main concern was that the virtual machine .vdi would be unusable following an
ill-timed disturbance (in a different situation, this occurred) but fsck shows no problem.
I guess that the panic helped to guard against damage.
Mac OS X 9G55 panic during Finder copy to an external USB disk hosting four volumes, one of which includes the .vdi for a shutting down Ubuntu 8.x
A slight correction: at the time of the panic the virtual machine was
restarting (not simply shutting down) following the routine offered at
http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-To-Install-OpenOffice-org-3-0-in-Ubuntu-8-10-96449.shtml
(subsequent re-installation of VirtualBox Guest Additions is required, I guess that this is normal).
Sorry for the wide ticket. I could have been more careful when pasting the panic text.
