Description
There's a little registry hack to hide any network interfaces from the Network and Sharing Center in Vista/7. Of course this doesn't make sense for real network adapters, but it does for virtual adapters like the ones as host-only in VirtualBox.
I've manually added this registry hack to the only host-only adapter I have in my VirtualBox installation. But to my surprise, this registry hack is removed when reinstalling or upgrading VirtualBox.
I'm here to suggest that you add this registry hack to installation. I'm suggesting this because I believe that something in the installer is resetting the adapters somehow, which is deleting some manually added registry entries.
The following link explains the problem in more detail and how to solve it. It's "for" VMware but the principles are the same, you just need to find the VirtualBox device instead of VMware's: http://aspoc.net/archives/2008/10/30/unidentified-network-issue-with-vmwares-virtual-nics-in-vista/
