Same here on Windows XP SP3. Windows File Protection kicks in and replaces d3d8.dll and d3d9.dll. The installer hints to a dialog but I did not have one appear.

In the Event Logs

File replacement was attempted on the protected system file d3d8.dll. This file was restored to the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of the bad file is 3.0.0.0, the version of the system file is 5.3.2600.5512
