Video mostly black in all guests
Reported by: | Paul Martin | Owned by: | |

Component: | GUI | Version: | VirtualBox 3.0.0 |
Keywords: | black | Cc: | |
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Linux |
Description
Environment: Debian sid i386. Radeon Mobile video chipset, running 32-bit 1024x768.
Even the "BIOS" screen appears in black-on-black.
Windows XP, when it boots to the desktop, shows only a few features (eg. parts of the start bar icon). The rest of the screen is black. This is the same in seamless and fullscreen modes. It doesn't matter whether 3D is turned on or off.
The guest OS does work, and is visible if you enable RDP and view it using rdesktop.
Screen is still mostly black after installing the 3.0.0 Guest Additions

Same issue here on VirtualBox 3.0.0 r49315, using the open source ATI driver (radeon) 6.12.2 on X.Org 1.6.1.901 (Linux 2.6.30-ARCH i686). My video card is a Radeon 9550 (based on the RV350 chipset). I'm running compiz 0.8.2. I've set s0_no_argb_match = class=VirtualBox
to prevent VirtualBox windows from being completely transparent (bug #3095). Compiz settings that differ from the defaults are provided in compiz_settings_mtah.txt.
The contents of the VM window are visible when the VM is paused, e.g. when the "Close Virtual Machine" dialogue is open (visible_when_paused.png), but not when running (not_visible_while_running.png). My Fluxbox desktop is completely black, with menus shown in black and white (fluxbox.png).

open source ati driver.
I solved adding in .bashrc the following line:
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1

Thanks for the info with XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS. Could you attach your host xorg.conf to this ticket?

XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
does solve the issue, but seems to remove the ability to have 3D accelerated guests (the "Enable 3D acceleration" checkbox is greyed out).
Attaching my xorg.conf as well.

Replying to mtah:
XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
does solve the issue, but seems to remove the ability to have 3D accelerated guests (the "Enable 3D acceleration" checkbox is greyed out).Attaching my xorg.conf as well.
yep, this is just a little patch to work with machines, but we need something to solve the problem otherwise we can't play games :p
