Reported by: | Viktor Ferenczi | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | other | Version: | VirtualBox 3.0.4 |
Keywords: | freeze frozen screen collapse collapsed | Cc: | |
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Linux |
Description
Host OS: Ubuntu 9.04 amd64, Gnome + compiz, minimum number of desktop effects
Host CPU: Intel Q6600, very good cooling, rock stable
Host RAM: 8Gb, non-ECC
Host VGA: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600 GT (rev a1), proprietary nVidia driver v180
Guest OS: Windows Server 2003 (machine definition and logs attached)
Symptom: VM suddenly frozen, screen collapsed into a singe "row", see screenshot of this final state. "Machine / ACPI shutdown" did not work. "Send shutdown signal" did not work. I had to "power off" the VM.

Screenshot of the frozen VM (last guest resolution was 1680x923)

I think the problem happened here:
06:50:15.747 VMMDev::SetVideoModeHint: got a video mode hint (1680x26x0) at 0
I did not resize the VM window to that small size, certainly. It was the active window when it happened and I didn't switch away from it in the host OS. It was previously in windowed mode with guest resolution of 1680x923 AFAIR, but the previous log line shows 1680x1050, which was the full screen size before I went back to windowed mode. Please note, that the log shows multiple successful fullscreen/windowed mode changes before that point.
06:50:14.799 VMMDev::SetVideoModeHint: got a video mode hint (1680x1050x0) at 0
So there's some contradiction here.
I tried to resize the VM window in hope of restoring its screen after it had frozen. These lines are due to trying this:
06:50:31.118 VMMDev::SetVideoModeHint: got a video mode hint (640x457x0) at 0 06:50:41.615 VMMDev::SetVideoModeHint: got a video mode hint (640x457x0) at 0 06:51:00.099 VMMDev::SetVideoModeHint: got a video mode hint (640x457x0) at 0
The black row remained there centered vertically all the time. Finally I maximized the VM's window to take that screenshot. Please note, that the 1680x923x0 video mode hint for this final resize wasn't in the logs.
