Description
Test environment: OpenSolaris_121 X86 + VirtualBox 3.0.4 (from http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) Guest OS is WindowsXP iso
I install VB 3.0.4 on OpenSolaris_121 X86, then load WindowsXP iso to install. At the harddisk format step, VB meets a critical error. It pops up a critical error window and asks me to view the log.

I can install Ubuntu 0904 successfully in the VB. The same WindowsXP iso can be installed successfully on another X86 box.

You might want to decrease the amount of guest RAM for this VM. Solaris hosts require a lot of memory. 384 MB RAM are normally enough for a Windows XP guest. You might increase the amount of swap space on your host as well, AFAIR there is a bug in some Solaris releases accounting swap space twice.
