The vRDP UI stops updating when using 2 CPUs

Reported by: Stine Kristiansen Owned by:

Description

I'm having problems with vRDP on a 64 bit Debian Squeeze host and a 32 bit Win XP client. The UI stops updating when I give the guest 2 CPUs. When going back to one it starts working again.

Typically I start the guest, then connect to vRDP using rdesktop. It looks fine until I try to enter my password. Nothing happens on screen. If I disconnect and reconnect I can do one more mouse click before it stops updating - so I can see that I managed to log in previously - the screen just did not update to show me that.

virtualbox-3.0: Installed: 3.0.6-52128_Debian_lenny

The guest additions is also up to date. The guest is a fresh install of XP. I also found this problem on another system running VB 3.0.2 where the XP guest has been trough several VBox versions.

To be more precise - the system running VB 3.0.2 is a Debian Lenny 32 bit host with a Windows XP 32 bit guest. So this happens on both 32 and 64 bit hosts on Debian Lenny and Squeeze. I'm doing a test run now so expect a log attached soon.

Replying to stkris:

Same problem here, but only sometimes!

Host: Debian/Lenny 32 bit, fully patched. VirtualBox 3.0.6-52128_Debian_lenny

Guest: win7_Eval_Enterprise. Latest guest addition installed.

I also have two CPU for the guest. Started out with only one CPU and didn't notice the problem then. I only have the problem when running headless and connecting with VRDP.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information!

Many asserts from vboxHwBufferWrite

This time the problem occured with VB 3.0.8 on an up-to-date Debian Lenny with Win XP also up-to-date.

The guest machine installed updates from Microsoft and rebooted. Then the VB window went all black and changed size to fullscreen width but only 1cm or so height. Had to reset the VM using VBoxManage. After a successful boot the guest machine displayed the login window. The user logged in but the screen did not update - it blacked out. She disconnected/reconnected the RDP client and saw that she was logged on. Clicked to start an app and the RDP client got a new blackout. After reconnecting she saw the app had started - but as soon as she clicked on something: a new blackout.

Hope this log helps - an assert has gone off many times.

The same problem occurrs with a curren UbuntuServer installation as host and running a Windows SBS 2008 guest. The RDP screen is updated until a certain point in the boot progress and then stops. Only relogin shows the current picture then. I have not checked the tip with the cpus until now. 4 are assigned currently.

The VirtualBox version is: 3.1.2r56127

I can verify that setting cpu number to one solves the problem. Also the guest system works a lot faster than. This seems to weird, because the processor is a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU.
